Team news: Schär and Krafth start at Burton

Written by Dan King

Fabian Schär and Emil Krafth return to Newcastle United's starting XI for tonight's pre-season friendly at Burton Albion, while Joelinton is back after injury.

Schär and Krafth were granted an extended break after helping their national teams reach the knockout stages of Euro 2020, with both returning to training earlier in the week before making substitute appearances at Rotherham on Tuesday night.

Joelinton, meanwhile, was hurt in the first half of United's first friendly of the summer, at York City, missing the last two matches.

Callum Wilson is not risked due to a slight knock, while Allan Saint-Maximin has not trained in recent days due to illness. Karl Darlow is still recovering at home after testing positive for Covid-19 earlier this month.

That means that Freddie Woodman starts in goal, with stand-in skipper Federico Fernández joining Krafth and Schär in defence and Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie occupying the wing-back roles.

Isaac Hayden partners Jeff Hendrick - who scored the Magpies' late equaliser on Tuesday - in midfield while Sean Longstaff and Ryan Fraser provide support for Joelinton.

On the bench are Mark Gillespie, Dan Langley, Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis, Kell Watts, Matty Longstaff, Dwight Gayle and youngsters Joe White, Tom Allan and Jack Young.
