Team news: Lejeune starts

Written by Tom Easterby

Florian Lejeune will start his first game since the opening day of the season as Newcastle United take on Southampton on Sunday (4pm kick-off).

United take on Saint at St. Mary's, with Rafa Benitez opting to hand French defender a start after his recent recovery from injury, with Ciaran Clark named among the substitutes.

There is also a start for Isaac Hayden, who comes in for Mikel Merino, who penned a permanent deal with the Magpies earlier this week.

Rob Elliot starts in goal, with DeAndre Yedlin, captain Jamaal Lascelles, Lejeune and Javier Manquillo making up the back four.

Matt Ritchie starts on the right-hand side of midfield, with Hayden partnering Jonjo Shelvey in the middle and Christian Atsu wide on the left, while Ayoze Perez continues to support Joselu in attack.

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow and defenders Clark and Jesus Gamez are also named on the bench, with Mohamed Diame and Merino providing midfield reinforcements.

And Jacob Murphy and Dwight Gayle complete the list of substitutes available to Benitez.

Newcastle United (4-4-1-1): Rob Elliot, DeAndre Yedlin, Florian Lejeune, Javier Manquillo; Matt Ritchie, Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Christian Atsu; Ayoze Perez; Joselu.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jesus Gamez, Ciaran Clark, Mohamed Diame, Mikel Merino, Jacob Murphy, Dwight Gayle.
