Team news: Howe hands Almirón start at St. James'

Miguel Almirón will start at St. James' Park for the first time in 2022 when Newcastle United take on Leicester City on Sunday (2:15pm kick-off).

The Paraguayan international, whose only previous start since the turn of the year came in last month’s defeat at Chelsea, will form part of a three-pronged forward line for United as Eddie Howe's side chase back-to-back home wins.

His inclusion comes at the expense of the injured Ryan Fraser, who pulled up during the 1-0 win over Wolves last Friday and was also replaced by Almirón on that occasion.

Aside from that enforced change, head coach Howe has kept faith with the other ten starters who helped the Magpies record that victory last time out.

That means Martin Dúbravka continues in goal behind a back four of Emil Krafth, Fabian Schär, Dan Burn and Matt Targett.

Jonjo Shelvey lines up in midfield alongside Bruno Guimarães, who was so impressive against Wolves, and Joelinton.

And Allan Saint-Maximin and Almirón will look to provide the ammunition for Chris Wood up front.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles is on the bench, along with Karl Darlow, Federico Fernández and Paul Dummett.

Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy and Sean Longstaff are also named among the substitutes, as is Joe Willock.

And forward Dwight Gayle could provide a more offensive option, should Howe require one.

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka; Emil Krafth, Fabian Schär, Dan Burn, Matt Targett; Jonjo Shelvey, Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton; Miguel Almirón, Chris Wood, Allan Saint-Maximin.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernández, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy, Dwight Gayle.
