Team news: Gayle back for Premier League opener

Dwight Gayle will lead the line as Newcastle United return to the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur.

The frontman sat out the Magpies’ last two pre-season friendlies – against VfL Wolfsburg and Hellas Verona – put has been passed fit to face Spurs.

Elsewhere, there is a Premier League debut for Florian Lejeune, with two other new signings – Javier Manquillo and Christian Atsu – also starting for United.

New No. 1 Rob Elliot has been given the nod in goal, with Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett joining Lejeune and Manquillo in the backline.

Jonjo Shelvey has been given the captain’s armband, and will sit alongside Isaac Hayden in central midfield.

Matt Ritchie starts on the opposite flank to Atsu, with Ayoze Pérez rounding off the line-up in the No. 10 role.
