Team news: First start of the season for Martin

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Martin Dúbravka makes his first appearance of the campaign as Newcastle United take on Arsenal in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

A heel injury has kept the popular Slovakian out of the entirety of the Magpies’ season so far, his last outing having come against Liverpool in the Premier League back in July. Dúbravka isn’t the only high-profile returnee at the Emirates Stadium, with skipper Jamaal Lascelles also coming back into the side.

Fit to play after recovering from Covid-19, Lascelles joins Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett and Emil Krafth in the Magpies’ backline.

Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick and Sean Longstaff make up a three-man central midfield, with Miguel Almirón providing support to forward pair Joelinton and Andy Carroll, the latter having struck for the first time since his return to St. James’ against Leicester last Sunday.

On the bench, there are spots for Mark Gillespie – who played all of United’s games in the early rounds of this season’s Carabao Cup – and youngster Elliot Anderson, who could make his first-team debut for the Magpies this evening.

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almirón, Joelinton, Andy Carroll.

Substitutes: Mark Gillespie, DeAndre Yedlin, Jacob Murphy, Matt Ritchie, Matty Longstaff, Elliot Anderson, Dwight Gayle.
