Second-string set for Senior Cup semi-final

Written by Dan King

Newcastle United's under-23s take on Newcastle Benfield in the semi-finals of the Techflow Marine Northumberland Senior Cup on Friday evening.

The Magpies have won the competition a record 36 times, but haven't lifted the trophy since beating Blyth Spartans in 2014.

If they are to do so this year, they'll need to get past Benfield, who are currently 13th in the Ebac Northern League Division One. Morpeth Town are already through to the final, which will be played at St. James' Park.

Although Benfield's league form has been somewhat inconsistent - and they do have games in hand on most of the sides around them - they have fared better in cup competitions and reached the third qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup before losing 1-0 to Vanarama League North promotion contenders Kidderminster Harriers.

They are managed by ex-Darlington midfielder Mark Convery while their squad includes former Magpies youngster Paul Brayson - now 40 years old but still prolific in front of goal - and Marc Dummett, the older brother of United defender Paul.

Kick-off at Whitley Park in Benton is at 7.30pm (UK time). Admission is £4 for adults and £2 concessions and there will be no free entry for season ticket holders or members.
