Roy Bentley, 1924 - 2018

We are saddened to have learned that former Newcastle United forward Roy Bentley has passed away.

Born in Bristol, Roy was on the books of both Bristol Rovers and Bristol City as a youngster and it was for the latter that he made his professional debut aged just 15.

Following the outbreak of World War II, he served in the Royal Navy and played wartime football before joining Newcastle United in 1946.

After a successful spell at St. James' Park, he returned south to Chelsea, where he would cement his reputation as one of the era's finest frontmen.

His career would also take him to neighbouring clubs Fulham and Queens Park Rangers before he hung up his boots and moved into management, first with Reading and then Swansea City.

Everyone at Newcastle United extends their deepest condolences to Roy's family, friends and former colleagues.
