Roberts looking forward to back-to-back cup fixtures

Written by Luke Vinton

Cal Roberts is looking forward to two cup ties in five days as Newcastle United's under-23s look to build on a positive run of results.

Roberts provided two goals and an assist for United in Monday night's 3-2 Premier League 2 victory over Stoke City's second string, extending their unbeaten streak to four matches in all competitions.

The Magpies now face two cup ties in succession, hosting Leeds United in a Premier League Cup Group H clash on Friday night at Whitley Park before a second round meeting with League Two Macclesfield Town in the Checkatrade Trophy at St. James' Park on Tuesday night.

"The two cup games are massive," Roberts told nufc.co.uk. "They will be confidence boosters for the team. We are unbeaten in four games now and, when the team get a win, it gives everyone a lot of confidence so we are always looking forward to the next game.

"With Leeds and Macclesfield coming up, it is important to focus on what is in front of us to continue the good form."

The 21-year-old's brace has taken his goal tally to eleven in 15 games this season but, although he looks certain to pass his record from the previous campaign, his focus remains on the overall team performance rather than personal achievements.

Roberts added: "Obviously, it was nice to score two goals and claim an assist for Elias (Sørensen) too. I've just got to keep performing to those types of standards every week and I think that's what I'm doing at the minute.

"I scored 12 goals last season so I'm doing well so far in terms of beating that target. However, I'm not too concerned on how many goals or assists I provide. What really matters is gaining wins for the team and that is what I'm happy about."

Admission on Friday night is free for season ticket holders and members, otherwise it's £3 for adults and £1 concessions.
