Perfect start for United stars as AFCON begins

Written by Rory Mitchinson

United’s contingent got off to an encouraging start as the Africa Cup of Nations kicked off in Gabon earlier this week.

Both Chancel Mbemba and Christian Atsu completed 90 minutes for their respective countries, with the latter putting in a man-of-the-match display.

Atsu impressed throughout as Ghana saw off Uganda to move to the top of Group D, West Ham United’s Andre Ayew netting the only goal from the spot.

Mbemba, meanwhile, helped the Democratic Republic of Congo to a 1-0 win over Morocco in Group C, an important result for the Leopards, who take on reigning champions Ivory Coast next.

In Group B, midfielder Henri Saivet – currently on loan at Saint-Etienne – entered the fray as a second half substitute as Senegal recorded an impressive 2-0 victory against Tunisia.

Mohamed Diame did not feature for the Lions of Teranga, who return to action against Zimbabwe in Franceville tomorrow.
