New signing Nelson 'excited to get started'

Written by Joseph Nelson

Newcastle United Women have announced the signing of 20-year-old winger Erin Nelson from Durham Cestria.

Nelson started her career at Newcastle United Women, and she expressed her delight at returning to the club.

"I was in the academy when I was very young," said Nelson. "It feels good to be back here, but it also feels weird. I'm excited to get started."

The Lady Magpies have been lauded for their attacking threat this season, and currently have a goal difference of +23 in the FA Women's National League Division One North.

Katie Barker, Kacie Elson and Georgia Gibson have all enjoyed prolific campaigns so far, and Nelson feels that she can further add to the team's offensive options.

She said: "I will bring pace to the side, and get at players and try to take them on. I will try to link up well with my other forwards."

Nelson is familiar with many of the Newcastle Women squad, having lined up alongside them for Northumbria University, and Lady Magpies manager Becky Langley also knows the winger well from their time together with the University team.

Nelson said: "Having that familiarity with Becky and the coaching staff puts me at ease. I know a lot of the girls already, so it has been easy to settle in and get to know the other girls that I didn't know quite as well."

Having played for local rivals Durham Cestria, Nelson has lined up against Newcastle Women on a number of occasions and she shared her feelings on transferring between the two North East sides.

"It feels different," she said. "When we play Durham I expect it to be a competitive game, as it usually is.

"Signing for Newcastle is a fresh start and a new challenge for me. Personally I want to progress further and become more consistent in my performances. Ultimately as a squad we want to try and get promoted."

Boss Langley has assembled a talented, hungry Newcastle Women team and the Lady Magpies' manager feels that Nelson will bolster her squad.

"I am delighted Erin has signed for us," said Langley. "She is a very exciting player and will add a lot of quality in front of goal.

"She's fast, good with the ball, and her finishing is one of her main assets. She's a feisty character and will help us push forward even further, I'm sure."
