Nelson: It feels amazing to get back on the pitch

Written by Joseph Nelson

Erin Nelson was thrilled to make her first Newcastle United Women start of the season in Sunday's 4-0 triumph over Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies, after returning from an injury she sustained in pre-season.

The winger was heavily involved in much of the Magpies' attacking play at Kingston Park as Becky Langley's side earned a key three points in the FA Women's National League Division One North clash to reduce the gap the league leaders Durham Cestria to just one point, with United still having a game in hand.

Having come off the bench in the win over their title rivals just four days prior, Nelson said it felt "amazing" to be involved from the off against Norton.

"It's been a long time since I've been in a black and white shirt due to injury and I've really missed being able to play," she told nufc.co.uk.

"But it feels amazing to get back on the pitch with the girls and help us gain six important points throughout the week.

"Having not played since pre-season, it has been very frustrating at times, but I've worked to get back in the right place and I'm really happy to be back. Hopefully, I can make an impact for the rest of the season."

Newcastle Women have been unfortunate with injuries this term, with Langley having to at times contend with a lengthy absentee list that included Nelson, Anna Soulsby and Rachel Lee, each of whom played a key part against Norton on Sunday.

Now that she is back out on the pitch for the Magpies, Nelson says she aims to kick on and contribute to what she hopes will be a successful season for Newcastle.

"I want to make an impact," she declared. "I want to create opportunities to score and help us gain the three points in each game.

"I like to link up and drive at players in attack and get the ball into the box. Hopefully, I can keep doing that in the games still to come.

"As a team, we work hard together, and for each other. We make sure we perform as individuals and as a collective, to get the best out of one another.

"In the last week, we have gained important points. But every game is important to us. We take it one game at a time and focus on the next training session and the next game ahead."

The next match for Langley's side is another league clash away at Barnsley Women on Sunday, 2nd April. Kick-off is at 2pm (BST).
