Muñoz's Mexico make winning start at Maurice Revello Tournament
Mexico Under-21s claimed a 1-0 win over Ghana in their opening group game of the Maurice Revello Tournament on Monday, with Santiago Muñoz playing over an hour.
The teenage striker, who joined the Magpies on an 18-month loan from Santos Laguna in August 2021, started the Group B clash at Aubagne's Stade de Lattre-de-Tassigny, before being replaced by SPAL's Teun Wilke in the 68th minute.
With the contest heading towards a stalemate, Victor Guzmán's strike in the closing stages secured an all-important three points for El Tri.
Mexico's youngsters, who reached the 2018 final before losing out to England, take on their Venezuela counterparts in their upcoming group fixture on Thursday, 2nd June (kick-off 5.30pm CEST) before facing Indonesia in their final match on Sunday, 5th June (kick-off 5.30pm CEST).
Muñoz, who scored two goals in nine appearances for Newcastle's second-string this term, was part of the Mexico Under-17 squad which reached the 2019 Under-17 World Cup final before narrowly losing out to hosts Brazil.
