Marriner to referee Magpies' Palace clash
Written by Tom Easterby
Andre Marriner has been confirmed as the referee for Newcastle United’s Premier League game at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
United head to Selhurst Park this weekend (3pm kick-off) looking for a first win of the season and Marriner, who took charge of the 1-1 draw between the two clubs at the same venue last term, is the man who has been tasked with refereeing the contest.
It will be the 47-year-old’s first Newcastle game of the season, and his sixth in total this term. Four of his five outings in 2018/19 have come in the Premier League, while one – Southampton’s 1-0 win at Brighton last month – was a Carabao Cup tie.
In those five fixtures – which included Manchester City’s 6-1 win over Huddersfield Town – he has shown a total of 16 yellow cards, but is yet to brandish a red.
Last season, he oversaw five Newcastle games, including the opening day defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, in which he dismissed Jonjo Shelvey.
Marriner’s most recent appointment involving the Magpies was the 3-0 win over Southampton at St. James’ Park in March.
He will be assisted by Scott Ledger and Simon Long at Selhurst Park, while Gavin Ward will be the fourth official.
