Birmingham-born Marriner is one of the top flight's most experienced officials, and first refereed a Newcastle game back in April 2005, when Graeme Souness' United side lost 2-1 at Norwich City.

Thursday night's contest will be the second time he has overseen a Magpies match on Merseyside so far this term, having also refereed Eddie Howe's side's 2-1 defeat at Liverpool back in August.
