Marriner in the middle at Anfield

Andre Marriner will referee Newcastle United’s Premier League game at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon (12:30pm kick-off).

The 48-year-old, who oversaw five United fixtures last season, has been appointed for the clash at Anfield, which will see Steve Bruce’s side go in search of a second successive away victory.

Marriner has been a top-flight referee since 2005, and was a FIFA international official for eight years between 2009 and 2017. He also took charge of the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Wigan Athletic in 2013.

But he has refereed just three games so far this term as 2019/2020 enters its second month, with all of those fixtures coming in the Premier League – Leicester City’s goalless draw with Wolves, Southampton’s 2-1 defeat at home to Liverpool and Manchester City’s 3-1 win at Bournemouth.

Birmingham-born Marriner is yet to issue a red card this campaign, but has dished out nine yellow cards in his three outings.

In 2018/19, he was the man in the middle of the Magpies’ home games against Brighton, Manchester United and Liverpool, and their away games at Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur.

Marriner will be assisted by Scott Ledger and Simon Long on Saturday, while Andy Madley will be the fourth official.

Mike Dean will be the VAR, and will be assisted by Dan Robathan.
