Major construction milestone met at St. James' STACK, presented by Sela
A key milestone was reached on the construction of 'St. James' STACK, presented by Sela' this week as the first of 56 shipping containers arrived on site in preparation for the next exciting phase of development.
The highly-anticipated fanzone is on course to open in summer 2024, with arrival of repurposed shipping containers, which are synonymous with the STACK brand, marking significant progress since transformation of the land on Strawberry Place began in January.
Celebrating the milestone, Newcastle United players Tino Livramento and Joe Willock attended a site visit on Tuesday, 26th March following installation of the first container. The players also took time to meet participants from NU Futures programme, who will benefit from career opportunities which the fanzone will bring to the area.
Alongside stimulating footfall for neighbouring businesses, it is expected that the site will create 150 full-time and part-time roles in the city centre. Through Newcastle United Foundation's employability programme - NU Futures - a host of invaluable first-time job roles will also be opened up to individuals within the local community.
NU Futures is currently one of the largest employment support programmes for schoolchildren, teenagers, and young adults across the North East. The programme engages 12,000 people annually through mentorship, apprenticeships and work placements, with an aim of transforming the way in which the next generation enter the world of work.
A new link between NU Futures and 'St. James' STACK, presented by Sela' has been scoped to deliver life-changing opportunities for youngsters, including the chance to enter employment and hone skills required to progress their future career prospects.
A diverse variety of roles ranging from bar staff and kitchen staff to baristas and kitchen porters are set to be offered by STACK in coming weeks ahead of the opening.
Commenting on progress of the development, Newcastle United's CEO, Darren Eales, said: "It's thrilling to see a vision come to life as the first of the renowned containers arrives on site, continuing to ramp up excitement ahead of STACK's return to the city centre this summer.
"We're pleased that this excitement is shared by local stakeholders who will benefit from the employment and economic benefits of having a bustling entertainment venue on their doorstep seven days per week. Collaboration between the Newcastle United Foundation and STACK will form a key foundation of a venue designed for everyone; from fans seeking entertainment to the next generation looking for the first step in their professional career."
