Magpies trio progress as AFCON continues

Written by Rory Mitchinson

A string of United players helped their countries to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations as the competition’s group phase continued.

In Group B, Henri Saivet – currently on loan at Saint-Etienne – struck a fine free-kick as Senegal made sure of their place in the last eight with a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe.

Mohamed Diame did not come off the bench for the Lions of Teranga, who take on Algeria later this evening looking to maintain their 100% record.

Christian Atsu’s Ghana are also assured of a place in the quarter-finals, Asamoah Gyan’s first-half strike enough to sink Mali and keep the Black Stars at the top of Group D.

Elsewhere, Chancel Mbemba played in midfield as the Democratic Republic of Congo drew 2-2 with holders Ivory Coast.

The Leopards will qualify for the last eight should they avoid defeat against Togo tomorrow, who have yet to record a win in the competition.
