Magpies to face Hearts in pre-season

Written by Tom Easterby

Newcastle United will travel to Scotland to face Heart of Midlothian in a pre-season fixture on Friday, 14th July.

The friendly will be played at the Edinburgh outfit’s Tynecastle home, and will kick off at 7.45pm (BST).

It is the third first team friendly to be added to the Magpies’ pre-season schedule, after trips to Preston North End on Saturday, 22nd July (3pm BST kick-off) and Bradford City on Wednesday, 26th July (7.30pm BST kick-off) were announced earlier this month.

Scottish Premiership side Hearts are managed by former Newcastle coach Ian Cathro, who took over the reins at Tynecastle in December 2016.

Cathro, 30, had initially arrived at St. James’ Park as part of former manager Steve McClaren’s backroom team, and remained part of the coaching staff under current manager Rafa Benitez until his departure to take up his first managerial role with the Jambos.

The fixture will be United’s first outing in Scotland since a 1-1 friendly draw with Rangers at Ibrox in August 2013, in which Shola Ameobi bagged a last-minute leveller for the visitors.

And the game will be United’s first against Hearts since August 1995, when Peter Beardsley scored to give Newcastle a 1-0 win during preparations for the 1995/96 league season.

Ticket details will be confirmed in due course.
