Loan watch: Woolston and Blyth celebrate title win

Written by Rory Mitchinson

It was a day to remember for Paul Woolston as Blyth Spartans clinched the Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division title with a 3-0 win over Halesowen Town at Croft Park.

The young stopper kept his third clean sheet in his last five outings as Spartans made sure of their place in next season’s National League North in front of a four-figure crowd.

Another United player chasing promotion with his loan side, Ivan Toney, helped Scunthorpe United to an impressive win over Bolton Wanderers at Glanford Park.

In the Championship, Adam Armstrong entered the fray as a late substitute as Barnsley won 2-0 at relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers.

North of the border, Freddie Woodman, Callum Roberts and Sean Longstaff all started Kilmarnock’s 3-1 defeat at Celtic.

Only ‘keeper Woodman completed the game, however, as Lee McCulloch’s side slipped to a first away defeat since December.

On the continent, Emmanuel Riviere’s Osasuna picked up a crucial 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Leganes, though Los Rojillos remain deep in relegation trouble.

In Ligue 1, Henri Saivet and Florian Thauvin’s respective sides both played out draws. Saivet completed all 90 minutes as Saint-Etienne struck a second-half equaliser against Nantes, with Thauvin replaced by former United midfielder Remy Cabella in Marseille’s stalemate at Toulouse.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mbabu helped Young Boys to a creditable point at runaway leaders Basel in the Swiss Super League, while Lubo Satka’s FC DAC snatched a last-gasp win over Slovan Bratislava.

Finally, in the Netherlands, Tim Krul’s AZ Alkmaar were held to a 1-1 draw by Roda JC on home soil, while Siem de Jong was an unused substitute in PSV Eindhoven’s thumping victory over Willem II.
