Loan watch: Woodman keeps first Killie clean sheet

Freddie Woodman kept the first clean sheet of his loan spell as Kilmarnock recorded a 2-0 victory at St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.
Sean Longstaff also clocked up 90 minutes for Killie, with Callum Roberts an unused substitute. The Ayrshire outfit remain eighth in the table, two points shy of a top-half place.
South of the border, Alex Gilliead came on to play an important part as Bradford City won 2-1 at Port Vale in League One.
Gilliead – introduced with half an hour remaining – set up Alex Jones for the Bantams’ clinching goal, Stuart McCall’s side remaining firmly in the race for automatic promotion.
Elsewhere in the third tier, Ivan Toney did not get off the bench for Scunthorpe United, who drew 1-1 at Bristol Rovers.
Though Toney has been short of game-time lately, the same cannot be said for Adam Armstong, who was handed a third consecutive start as Barnsley held Huddersfield Town to a 1-1 draw in the Championship – a useful outcome for his parent side.
In League Two, it was a bitterly disappointing afternoon for Macaulay Gillesphey and Carlisle United, as the Cumbrians suffered a damaging 3-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Brunton Park.
Gillesphey was not the only United loanee to end up on the wrong end of a heavy scoreline. In France, Florian Thauvin’s Marseille were beaten 5-1 at home to arch-rivals Paris St. Germain. Thauvin was taken off after 67 minutes as Les Phocéens endured their worst home defeat in Ligue 1 since 1953.
Marseille remain level on points with Saint-Etienne, who slipped to a surprise loss at home to Caen. Henri Saivet played 90 minutes for Les Verts.
It was also a deflating weekend for both Emmanuel Riviere and Siem de Jong. Riviere started and finished Osasuna’s latest defeat – at Espanyol – while de Jong entered the fray as a late substitute as PSV Eindhoven lost 2-1 at Feyenoord.
Tim Krul continued his return to action as AZ Alkmaar salvaged a late point against PEC Zwolle, though Kevin Mbabu did not feature for BSC Young Boys – who won 3-2 at Grasshopper.
In Slovakia, Lubo Satka enjoyed a memorable home debut for FC DAC, who thrashed basement side Tatran Presov 5-0.
Finally, Paul Woolston’s Blyth Spartans are now 17 points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, Alun Armstong’s charges seeing off Corby Town at Croft Park to continue their remarkable run of form.
