Loan watch: Wembley heartache for Woodman and Swans

Written by Rory Mitchinson

There was disappointment for Freddie Woodman at Wembley as Swansea City lost 2-0 to Brentford in the Championship play-off final.

The 24-year-old stopper – who picked up the division’s Golden Glove award after an impressive second season on loan at the Liberty Stadium – gave away the penalty which led to Brentford’s opener, with ex-Magpie Ivan Toney scoring from the spot.

Emiliano Marcondes’ clinical finish in the 20th minute doubled the Bees’ lead and left the Swans with a mountain to climb.

Though André Ayew had a decent opportunity early into the second half, Steve Cooper’s side were unable to stage any sort of fightback, with Jay Fulton’s dismissal 25 minutes from time all but ending their chances.

Brentford’s victory means the line-up for the 2021/22 Premier League campaign is now complete, with the West Londoners, Norwich and Watford replacing Sheffield United, West Brom and Fulham.

There could yet be promotion joy for another United loanee, though, with Lewis Cass and Hartlepool gearing up for a National League play-off eliminator against Bromley at Victoria Park on Sunday. Cass played all 90 minutes as Pools ended the regular season with a 4-0 win over Weymouth on Saturday.
