Loan Watch: Watts' winner lifts Argyle into play-off spot

Kell Watts netted his first league goal for Plymouth Argyle on Saturday – a strike which proved to be the winner as his loan club moved into a League One play-off spot.

The Newcastle United defender, who also scored for Argyle in their Carabao Cup defeat at Leyton Orient earlier in the campaign, has made himself an important part of the set-up at Home Park since joining on loan for the duration of the 2020/21 season.

And the 20-year-old was again in the line-up as Frank Nouble gave Ryan Lowe’s men the lead against Northampton Town at the weekend.

Ricky Korboa levelled the scores but it was Watt’s late volley, arrowed beyond the Cobblers’ keeper Steve Arnold, that sealed the win with four minutes remaining and lifted Argyle to sixth in the third tier.

In League Two, there was a senior debut for Jack Young as Tranmere Rovers were beaten 1-0 at Newport County.

Saikou Janneh’s winner gave the Exiles the win, while Young stepped off the bench with 25 minutes remaining to make his bow as ten-man Rovers – who had Paul Lewis dismissed for a challenge on Joss Labadie – suffered defeat in Wales.

It was an afternoon to forget for two young United goalkeepers, Jake Turner and Freddie Woodman, as both of their loan clubs were beaten in League Two and the Championship respectively.

Turner was between the sticks as Morecambe lost 4-0 at Crawley Town, while Woodman’s Swansea lost 2-1 at home to Huddersfield Town.

Tom Allan and Mo Sangare both missed out on Accrington Stanley’s 2-0 defeat at Ipswich Town, with Allan an unused substitute and Sangare not part of the squad, while Lewis Cass’ Hartlepool United saw their National League clash at Barnet postponed.

In La Liga, both Yoshinori Muto and Florian Lejeune were in action, with Muto completing almost an hour in Eibar’s goalless draw with Osasuna and Lejeune playing the first half of Alaves’ 2-0 defeat to Elche.

And in Holland, Elias Sorensen came on at half time for Almere City as they drew 2-2 with Dordrecht in the Eerste Divisie.
