Loan Watch: Two in two for Toney

Written by Tom Easterby

Ivan Toney bagged his second goal in as many weeks as Wigan Athletic earned a convincing 4-0 win over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

The 21-year-old, who netted in the Latics’ 3-2 FA Cup victory over AFC Fylde last weekend, was named on the bench at Kingsmeadow, and watched on as his side took a three-goal lead through Michael Jacobs, Nick Powell and Max Power.

Former Northampton Town forward Toney replaced Will Grigg in the 89th minute, and having barely been on the pitch for a minute, he found the target with a deflected strike that beat George Long.

That strike moves Toney onto six goals for the campaign, with Wigan now four points clear of Shrewsbury Town at the top of League One.

Bradford City are now in fourth place, after Alex Gilliead helped them to a 2-1 win over Southend United.

Former Carlisle United frontman Charlie Wyke bagged the winner from the spot for the Bantams, with Gilliead playing the full 90 minutes at Roots Hall.

Also in the third tier, Sean Longstaff started for Blackpool as they beat the Shrews 1-0 thanks to Joe Nolan’s goal.

Teenage midfielder Longstaff was withdrawn with 20 minutes remaining as the Tangerines saw out the game to earn the points, although they dropped to 14th in the table.

Matz Sels unused substitute in Anderlecht’s 5-0 defeat at Club Brugge on Sunday, while Achraf Lazaar missed Benevento’s 2-1 defeat to SPAL through injury.

Stuart Findlay wasn’t involved in Kilmarnock’s 1-0 win over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership, while Callum Williams’ Gateshead weren’t in action as their National League game against Woking was postponed.
