Loan watch: Trio on target

Written by Tom Easterby

A trio of Newcastle United youngsters were on target for their respective loan clubs on Saturday.

Adam Armstrong, Ivan Toney and Alex Gilliead all got themselves on the scoresheet this weekend, helping Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Bradford City earn victories.

Armstrong bagged Bolton’s second as they went 2-0 up at home to Norwich City, and despite Josh Murphy – brother of Newcastle’s Jacob – pulling one back, Phil Parkinson’s side held out to move off the foot of the Sky Bet Championship.

Both Toney’s Wigan and Gilliead’s Bradford progressed in the FA Cup, with the Latics seeing off Crawley Town to make it through to the second round.

Toney opened the scoring at the DW Stadium, giving his side the advantage just before the half hour as his side recorded a 2-1 victory.

And winger Gilliead slotted home after just four minutes of Bradford’s 2-0 win over Chesterfield, setting the Bantams on their way to the second round before he was withdrawn with three minutes remaining.

Sean Longstaff’s Blackpool won’t be in the hat for the second round, though, after they lost 2-1 to Boreham Wood. The 20-year-old appeared as a 77th-minute substitute, but Dan Holman’s late goal won it for the hosts.

Young defender Callum Williams helped Steve Watson’s Gateshead record a 2-0 FA Cup win at home to Chelmsford City.

The full back played 66 minutes at the International Stadium, picking up a yellow card before being replaced by Theo Vassell.

A number of other Magpies loanees, including Matz Sels, Stuart Findlay and Achraf Lazaar, are due to play for their loan clubs on Sunday.
