Loan Watch: Toney on target in the FA Cup

Written by Tom Easterby

Ivan Toney was on target for Wigan Athletic on Tuesday, helping the Latics reach the third round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 victory over AFC Fylde.

The 21-year-old opened the scoring in the second round replay at the DW Stadium, firing home Callum Elder’s low cross at the far post to give his side the lead.

But non-league Fylde turned the game around to lead 2-1, and it was left to Will Grigg to ensure League One Wigan’s progress as his two late goals won it for the hosts.

That first half strike was Toney’s fifth goal of the season for the Latics, who he joined on loan in August.

Meanwhile, young defender Callum Williams made his return from injury as Gateshead surrendered their lead in the final seconds of their National League clash at Torquay United.

Right back Williams came on as a 73rd-minute substitute for Jordan Preston at Plainmoor, but couldn’t help Steve Watson’s side hold on to their lead as they were pegged back by Sean McGinty’s last-gasp leveller.
