Loan watch: Toney makes Latics bow

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Ivan Toney was the only United loanee to start as the EFL campaign got up and running on Saturday.

Toney played for more than an hour as Wigan Athletic – relegated from the Championship last term – won 1-0 at Milton Keynes Dons.

In the same division, Alex Gilliead and Sean Longstaff were both unused substitutes as their respective clubs – Bradford City and Blackpool – did battle at Valley Parade. The Bantams – among the Magpies’ pre-season opponents – beat the newly-promoted Tangerines 2-1.

Also in League One, Lee Clark’s Bury overcame Walsall at Gigg Lane, but Tom Heardman was not in the Shakers’ squad.

In the Championship, Adam Armstrong came on as a late substitute as Bolton Wanderers lost 3-2 to Leeds United at the Macron Stadium, a game which saw former Magpie Vurnon Anita make his debut for the Whites.

Finally, in Belgium, goalkeeper Matz Sels kept a clean sheet to help Anderlecht to a narrow win over Oostende.
