Loan watch: Thauvin at the double

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Florian Thauvin netted twice as Marseille eased past Angers at the Stade Vélodrome on Friday night.

Thauvin has now struck ten goals for Les Phocéens this term, with former United midfielder Remy Cabella also on target for Rudi Garcia’s side.

On Saturday, Freddie Woodman, Callum Roberts and Sean Longstaff all started for Kilmarnock, who recorded a 2-1 win at Ross County in the Scottish Premiership.

Victory sees Killie rise to seventh in the standings, just two points shy of the top half.

South of the border, Adam Armstrong played the first 80 minutes of Barnsley’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town in the Sky Bet Championship. The Tykes looked to be on course for a first win since Valentine’s Day, only for Tom Lawrence to grab an injury-time equaliser.

In League One, Alex Gilliead was forced to leave the field less than 40 minutes into Bradford City’s 2-0 win at Coventry City.

While the Bantams appear to be hitting form at the right time, the opposite is true for Ivan Toney’s Scunthorpe United.

The Iron’s eight-game winless run looked to be coming to an end at Gillingham, where they led 2-0 with 15 minutes to play. Remarkably, however, they ended up empty-handed, as the Gills’ Josh Wright – a former Scunthorpe player – converted three late penalties.

In League Two, Macaulay Gillesphey missed out on Carlisle United’s 3-0 defeat to Cambridge United at Brunton Park, another blow to the Cumbrians’ hopes of an automatic promotion place.

Finally, young goalkeeper Paul Woolston clocked up another 90 minutes as Blyth Spartans drew 2-2 with Buxton in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.
