Loan Watch: Man of the match Cass' dream debut for Pools

On-loan full back Lewis Cass made a fine start to his spell at Hartlepool United, earning three points and the man of the match award on his debut for the National League side.

The 20-year-old Newcastle United defender, who will stay at Victoria Park until the end of the season, started for Pools on their opening-day clash with Aldershot on Saturday.

Gavan Holohan’s late winner handed Dave Challinor’s men a 2-1 victory, with Cass playing the full 90 minutes at right back on what was his senior bow.

And his display impressed his new club, earning him the man of the match award as Challinor’s side kicked off the campaign in the best possible way.

A handful of Cass’ fellow United loanees enjoyed productive weekends too, with goalkeeper Jake Turner keeping a clean sheet for Morecambe as they won 1-0 at home to Port Vale in League Two.

And in La Liga, both Florian Lejeune and Yoshinori Muto featured as their respective sides picked up three points over the weekend.

Lejeune lined up for Alaves as they beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0, with the French centre half excelling to help the Spanish outfit record a clean sheet to go with their victory.

And forward Muto started for Eibar as they won 2-1 at Real Valladolid, though the Japanese frontman was replaced with quarter of an hour remaining.

In League One, Kell Watts’ Plymouth Argyle were beaten 1-0 by Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

The young stopper played the full game, and almost snatched a leveller for Argyle late on, but saw his effort cleared off the line.

Meanwhile, Tom Allan made a late substitute appearance during Accrington Stanley’s 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon, entering the fray with just a minute remaining.

But fellow Magpie Mo Sangare wasn’t part of the matchday squad for John Coleman’s side.

And in the Championship, goalkeeper Freddie Woodman missed out on Swansea City’s 2-1 win over Millwall at the Liberty Stadium through illness.
