Loan watch: Gilliead set for Wembley but Toney misses out

Written by Rory Mitchinson

There were contrasting emotions for two Magpies out on loan as the League One play-off semi-finals came to a close on Sunday.

Despite opening the scoring on the day, it was a heartbreaking afternoon for Ivan Toney, as Scunthorpe United lost 3-2 to Millwall at Glanford Park.

However, Alex Gilliead can look forward to a Wembley date against the Lions later this month, thanks to Bradford City’s aggregate victory over Fleetwood Town.

Toney – who started the campaign with another third-tier side, Shrewsbury Town – has finished his spell with the Iron strongly, netting six times since the end of March.

Gilliead, meanwhile, came on for the last 20 minutes at Highbury Stadium, where the Bantams held out for a 0-0 draw to eliminate Uwe Rosler’s side.

The 21-year-old has made ten appearances for Bradford, having struck twice in 21 outings for Luton Town earlier this season.
