Loan watch: Duo on target

Written by Tom Easterby

Siem de Jong and Florian Thauvin were both on target for their respective loan clubs this weekend.

In the Eredivisie, de Jong grabbed an equaliser for PSV Eindhoven ten minutes from time in their 1-1 draw at Ajax, latching onto Gaston Pereiro’s pass to cancel out Davy Klaassen’s opener.

But Tim Krul wasn’t involved for Ajax, as he continues to work towards a first team return from injury.

And in Ligue 1, winger Thauvin found the net just after the hour mark to put Marseille 2-0 up at home to Lille, after Bafetimbi Gomis’ earlier strike had put them ahead.

Thauvin was replaced by former Magpie Remy Cabella with four minutes left on the clock as the scoreline remained the same.

Also in France, Henri Saivet was an unused substitute in Saint-Etienne’s 2-1 defeat at Lorient, while defender Kevin Mbabu played the opening 75 minutes of BSC Young Boys’ 3-2 win at Thun in the Swiss Super League before being replaced by Yoric Ravet.

Emmanuel Riviere came off the bench at the break during Osasuna's La Liga clash away at Deportivo La Coruna, but the French forward couldn't help his side find a way back into the contest.

And back in England, young centre back Macaulay Gillesphey helped Carlisle United move to within two points of League Two leaders Plymouth Argyle after the Cumbrians beat Yeovil Town 2-1.

Gillesphey played the full 90 minutes at Brunton Park, as goals from Shaun Brisley and Charlie Wyke lifted Keith Curle’s side into second place in the table.

Luton Town, too, continue to challenge at the top end of the division, and winger Alex Gilliead helped them to a 2-0 win at Blackpool before being substituted in the 84th minute. The Hatters are now in fifth place.

But at the other end of the table, Kyle Cameron and Tom Heardman both missed out on Newport County’s 3-1 loss at Crawley and Hartlepool United’s 0-0 draw at Portsmouth respectively.

In League One, Haris Vuckic came off the bench with just over 20 minutes remaining of Bradford City’s 1-1 draw Walsall which kept them in the play-off places, while Bolton Wanderers – who sit just one place ahead of the Bantams in third – slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Chesterfield, with Sammy Ameobi playing the full 90 minutes for the Trotters.

Ivan Toney wasn’t part of the Shrewsbury Town side that beat Bristol Rovers 2-0, and Jamie Sterry missed Coventry City’s 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield United, which was interrupted by protesting supporters late on.

Adam Armstrong wasn’t involved for Barnsley as they secured a memorable 4-3 Championship win at Cardiff City, while teenage goalkeeper Paul Woolston kept a clean sheet in Blyth Spartans’ 2-0 win over Barwell.
