Loan watch: De Jong's PSV stay in title hunt

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Siem de Jong’s PSV Eindhoven remain in title contention after recording a fourth consecutive victory in the Eredivisie on Saturday.

De Jong played 88 minutes as Phillip Cocu’s side won 2-0 at Sparta Rotterdam, with Sparta’s city rivals – table-topping Feyenoord – going down 2-1 at Ajax on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Tim Krul registered back-to-back clean sheets with AZ Alkmaar, though the Kaaskoppen were forced to settle for a point at home to Groningen.

Elsewhere, Florian Thauvin was withdrawn late on as Marseille drew 1-1 at home to struggling Dijon in Ligue 1.

Another Frenchman, Emmanuel Riviere, again ended up on the losing side for Osasuna, who lost 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.

It was a more enjoyable weekend for Kevin Mbabu, though, as the defender helped Young Boys to a dramatic 3-2 win over Vaduz at the Stade de Suisse.

Closer to home, Freddie Woodman and Sean Longstaff both started and finished Kilmarnock’s 1-1 draw at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, with Callum Roberts introduced as a late substitute.

South of the border, only one of the Magpies’ loan contingent tasted victory.

That player was Paul Woolston, who helped Blyth Spartans take another massive step towards the Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division title with a 1-0 win at Stafford Rangers.

In the Championship, Adam Armstrong came on with half an hour remaining as Barnsley snatched a late point against Sheffield Wednesday, but Ivan Toney’s Scunthorpe United slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Millwall in League One.

Neither Alex Gilliead nor Macaulay Gillesphey figured for their respective sides, who both picked up valuable wins to keep their promotion bids on track.
