Loan Watch: Armstrong's brace earns Rovers win

Written by Tom Easterby

Adam Armstrong proved to be the matchwinner for Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night as his brace earned them a 2-1 win at Portsmouth in League One.

Armstrong – who celebrated his 21st birthday with his first Rovers goal at Oldham on Saturday – put his side ahead in the first half at Fratton Park, but Conor Chaplin levelled five minutes after the restart.

But the England Under-20 international’s strike three minutes from time won it for Rovers and capped a memorable few days for the young forward, whose side now face Bury on Monday night.

He wasn’t the only Magpies player on target on Tuesday, though, as Ivan Toney bagged Scunthorpe United’s first goal in their 2-2 draw at Peterborough United.

Ex-United winger Marcus Maddison put the Posh in front, but Toney equalised just after the half hour – his second goal since returning to the Iron on loan.

Junior Morias put the hosts back in front before Ryan Yates earned Scunthorpe a point, keeping them fifth in the table.

Elsewhere in League One, Sean Longstaff helped Blackpool to a 2-0 win at Wigan, while Alex Gilliead was part of the Bradford City side that drew 1-1 at Charlton Athletic.

In League Two, Jamie Sterry and Dan Barlaser featured for Crewe Alexandra in their 1-0 defeat at Accrington Stanley, while Stuart Findlay’s Kilmarnock beat Dundee 3-2 in the Scottish Premiership, with Iain Wilson bagging a late winner at Rugby Park.

Meanwhile, in the National League, Callum Williams made a second half substitute appearance for Gateshead as they won 1-0 at Guiseley.
