Langley's double vision ahead of cup final

Written by Aaron Hindhaugh

Becky Langley believes it would be "incredible" for Newcastle United Women to complete a league and cup double this season, with their first chance of silverware coming on Saturday in the FA Women's National League Cup final.

After beating Portsmouth Women in a dramatic semi-final at St. James' Park last month, Newcastle now face Hashtag United Women at Kenilworth Road, which will be a welcome switch in focus from their impressive league campaign.

The Magpies have had to come through some extremely tricky ties to reach this stage, seeing off Burnley Women, Boldmere St. Michaels Women, Nottingham Forest Women and AFC Fylde Women before overcoming Pompey, so a cup final at a Premier League venue is a fine reward for Langley and her team, who will be backed by more than 3,000 supporters in Bedfordshire.

"It's going to be absolutely incredible to give those fans the opportunity of a cup final," Langley told nufc.co.uk. "Hopefully we can pack out Kenilworth Road with a black and white sea.

"We'll have that extra motivation to win the game anyway but we're just going to enjoy the experience with our friends, family and the fans."

After achieving promotion on the final day of last season, United are now gunning for back-to-back league titles. That was their aim heading into the campaign, but adding a national cup would be a huge bonus.

Langley added: "If we can do the double it will be incredible. We just take one game at a time and our next one is the cup final.

"We're going to prepare as we always do, look at the opposition and how we can exploit them and kick on. We're always just focused on when is the next session, when's the next game and how do we prepare for it?".

Having navigated their way past the leaders of the FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division in the previous round, Langley's side now face the side currently second in that league.

"It's just about that relentlessness to go and win whatever game we play," Langley said. "The thing about myself and my team from when I coach and even when I played is to never give up, regardless of the result.

"I think that little extra buzz about the cup final should give everyone a spring in their step but to be fair, we push them every single week in training."

Newcastle take on Hashtag United Women at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, March 23rd and tickets can be purchased here.

"We're going to prepare as we always do, look at the opposition and how we can exploit them and kick on. We're always just focused on when is the next session, when's the next game and how do we prepare for it?"
