Jamie Miley reflects on Rams rout

Jamie Miley was delighted to net his first goal at under-21 level as Newcastle United's second-string recorded a 4-1 win against Derby County in the Premier League 2.

United’s youngsters scored twice in the first-half, with Jamie Miley opened the scoring on the half hour mark, following an assist from younger brother Lewis, before Amadou Diallo’s penalty doubled the visitors’ lead at the Loughborough University Stadium.

Magpies goalkeeper Max Thompson was sent off within 60 seconds of the restart, following a last man challenge, before substitute shot-stopper Will Brown saved Lennon Wheeldon's penalty minutes later, redeeming himself after fouling the Rams forward.

Strikes from Lewis Miley and Michael Ndiweni extended Newcastle’s lead further, despite their disadvantage, with Darren Robinson’s header proving a mere consolation as Ben Dawson’s side recorded back-to-back Division Two victories for the first time since October.

Miley, who signed his first professional contract with his boyhood club last summer, told nufc.co.uk: “I thought all of the lads were excellent tonight. Watching the first-team yesterday, they were playing really positive and we tried to copy that which I think we did.

“We went down to ten men, which is not what you want, but to score two more goals after the red card was absolutely brilliant by the lads.

“I loved that my goal was set up by Lewis. When it came across, I was just thinking ‘it is time’. The amount of times we’ve played with each other, we’ve waited a while for that to happen so I was buzzing.

“It’s always nice to finish strong and pick up back-to-back wins. It’s been a long time coming for us since Ben (Dawson) came in. It’s been really pleasing. We could see the performances had been coming together but we didn’t quite get that little bit at the end that we expected.

"For it to happen now is really good and we can’t wait to kick on next season.”

Newcastle’s youngsters were involved in a 4-3 win against their Norwich City counterparts last week and Miley impressed that the team continued their bright form in front of goal.

Despite what seemed a convincing scoreline, the 19-year-old central midfielder - who regained his place in the starting XI against Derby - admitted the team were made to show character to ultimately preserve maximum points against County.

Miley added: “We’re really happy to score four goals again. We work hard on it in training on scoring goals and making sure we aren’t missing the target. For it it come off in the matches is great."

“We didn’t expect to go down to ten men so quickly into the second half. We all dug in, showed a positive attitude to keep going and scored twice rather than feeling sorry for ourselves after the red card and giving in. I felt we got the win we deserved.

“I was really pleased to get a goal and assist. It’s been a bit of a mixed season for me after being in and out of the team but everytime I play, I just need to keep doing what I’m doing and then prove it with performances like today."
