Introducing Joe White

The 19-year-old midfielder, who hails from Carlisle, has been named on the bench for the clash with the League One side, as has fellow youngster Elliot Anderson, who made his Magpies bow at this stage of the competition against Arsenal last year.

White has already featured for United in pre-season, coming off the bench in a friendly at Rotherham in July before making another substitute appearance at Burton and starting in a practice match at Burnley, while he was also an unused substitute against Manchester United home and away and Manchester City at home in the Premier League this season, but this would be his first taste of senior top flight experience should he come on.

The Cumbrian youngster, who has represented England at under-18 level, was part of Newcastle United Under-18s' run to the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals last term, scoring in the fourth round during a 4-1 triumph over Leeds United. 

After joining Newcastle from hometown club Carlisle United in 2016, the highly-rated playmaker signed his first professional contract in 2019 and is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his late grandfather, Peter Hampton, who played for Don Revie's Leeds United during the 1970s and 1980s as well playing more than 100 games each for Stoke City and Burnley - and reached the semi-final stage of the FA Cup during his time with Leeds.

Speaking to NUFC TV after his friendly appearance at Rotherham, White said: "From where I was as a kid, just playing in the street, to now playing my first game for the first team - hopefully it's the first of many if I keep working hard. 

"I was at Carlisle United from seven until 13 and had a two-week trial at Newcastle before signing in the under-14 season. I signed a scholarship and then pro at 17.

"It's about how much I've worked for it, how much dedication, with my family coming over from Carlisle, especially when I was at school - four times a week, they were coming over before I actually moved when I left school, so it's all down to them, really."

White's parents, Jamie and Fiona, weren't able to attend that game at the AESSEAL New York Stadium due to work commitments, but they will be at St. James' this afternoon with the hope of seeing their son reach another significant milestone in his career. 

And the youngster added: "At the start of last season, I was out for ten weeks and then ten weeks at the end of the season as well. There were a lot of lows in the past season but to get (the pre-season debut) was a massive high and hopefully there's more to come in the season."
