International round-up: Trippier starts as England draw with Germany

Written by Dan King

Kieran Trippier became the first player to be capped by England while playing for Newcastle United in more than six years on Tuesday evening as he helped Gareth Southgate's side come from behind to draw with Germany in Munich.

The Bury-born defender played the entirety of the UEFA Nations League clash, switching from the right-back role he plays for the Magpies to the left-back position for the Three Lions.

And despite conceding first to Jonas Hofmann's 50th-minute strike, a late Harry Kane penalty earned England a point in Group A3 in what was Trippier's 36th appearance for his country.

But it was his first since joining the Magpies from Atletico Madrid in January, with Andros Townsend the last Newcastle man to play for England when he appeared as a substitute against Australia at the Stadium of Light in May 2016.

England have two more Nations League games this summer, both on home soil. On Saturday, Italy travel to Wolves' Molineux - behind closed doors due to sanctions taken against the Football Association by UEFA following crowd trouble at the Euro 2020 final at Wembley last summer - before Hungary head to the same venue on Tuesday, 14th June.

On Monday, Bruno Guimarães won his eighth cap for Brazil, coming on as an 85th-minute substitute in a 1-0 friendly win against Japan in Tokyo.
