International Magpies: Fraser handed Scotland start

Written by Tom Easterby

A host of United players are in action for their respective countries during September's break from domestic action.

You can find a full list of all the Newcastle players involved here - and a run-down of how they got on below.

Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier

Friday 23rd September
Italy 1 England 0
San Siro

United stopper Pope was handed a start at San Siro by Gareth Southgate, but was beaten by Giacomo Raspadori's strike with just over 20 minutes left on the clock. Trippier, meanwhile, remained on the substitutes' bench for the defeat in Milan.

Monday 26th September
England 3 Germany 3
Wembley Stadium

Goalkeeper Pope was handed England's number one shirt at Wembley, and had an eventful evening between the posts. He was beaten by Ilkay Gundogan's penalty and Kai Havertz's effort before the hosts fought back to lead thanks to Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Kane's spot kick. But the Magpies man's mistake allowed Havertz to stab home a late leveller for Germany, with teammate Trippier remaining on the bench throughout.

Ryan Fraser

Wednesday 21st September
Scotland 3 Ukraine 0
Hampden Park

Winger Fraser impressed during his cameo in Scotland's comfortable UEFA Nations League win over Ukraine on Wednesday, recording a pair of assists for Lyndon Dykes' late double.

John McGinn put the hosts ahead in Glasgow before Fraser replaced Stuart Armstrong for the final quarter of an hour, and just four minutes later the Magpies man sent over the corner for Dykes to nod home his side's second of the night.

And with three minutes left, they repeated the routine, with Fraser delivering another corner onto the head of Dykes to make it 3-0 and round off an impressive win.

Saturday 24th September
Scotland 2 Republic of Ireland 1
Hampden Park

Fraser made another appearance from the substitutes bench as Steve Clarke's men recorded another victory, with the Magpies man entering the fray - again in place of Armstrong - for the final half an hour.

Tuesday 27th September
Ukraine 0 Scotland 0
Marshal Jozef Pilsudski Stadium

The former Bournemouth wideman was handed a start by Clarke and played 72 minutes as Scotland sealed their Nations League promotion.

Chris Wood

Thursday 22nd September
Australia 1 New Zealand 0
Suncorp Stadium

The Newcastle frontman - the All Whites' all-time record goalscorer - started up front and captained his country for the friendly in Brisbane, but was unable to help his side find a way through as Awer Mabil's goal just after the half hour separated the two sides. Wood completed 71 minutes before being replaced by Callum McCowatt.

Sunday 25th September
New Zealand 0 Australia 2
Eden Park

Wood started up front again for New Zealand, but was withdrawn just after the half hour after picking up a knock in Auckland.

Bruno Guimarães

Friday 23rd September
Brazil 3 Ghana 0
Stade Oceane

Guimarães was named among the substitutes for Brazil's convincing win in Le Havre, but wasn't called upon as Richarlison's brace added to Marquinhos' opener to seal the victory.

Fabian Schär

Saturday 24th September
Spain 1 Switzerland 2
Estadio La Romareda

Schär was named among the substitutes as Switzerland recorded an impressive win in Spain, but he didn't get on as Eric Garcia's own goal settled the contest in their favour.

Tuesday 27th September
Switzerland 2 Czech Republic 1
Kybunpark

The Magpies defender completed the full 90 minutes for Switzerland as they secured a victory in St. Gallen.

Miguel Almirón

Friday 23rd September
Paraguay 1 UAE 0
Stadion Wiener Neustadt

Almirón completed the full 90 minutes for his country as they ran out winners in a friendly thanks to a goal from Fabian Balbuena.

Tuesday 27th September
Paraguay 0 Morocco 0
Estadio Benito Villamarin

A relatively low-key 90 minute outing for Almirón, as his side played out a friendly stalemate in Spain.

Jamal Lewis

Saturday 24th September
Northern Ireland 2 Kosovo 1
Windsor Park

Lewis was handed a start for his country in Belfast and completed 77 minutes before being replaced by former Newcastle full back Shane Ferguson, just prior to the hosts' late fightback.

Tuesday 27th September
Greece 3 Northern Ireland 1
Georgios Kamaras Stadium

The ex-Norwich man started again for Ian Baraclough's men but was withdrawn with 15 minutes to go in their defeat in Athens.

Alex Murphy

Wednesday 21st September
Republic of Ireland Under-19s 6 Gibraltar Under-19s 0
Central Park

United youngster Murphy played 90 minutes for his country in their European Championship qualifying win over Gibraltar in Wales, and turned in an encouraging display, setting up his side's fifth goal with a cross for Nathan Fraser to head home. The teenager also went close to netting himself, striking the woodwork in the second half.

Saturday 24th September
Wales Under-19s 0 Republic of Ireland Under-19s 2
Nantporth Stadium

Murphy helped his side record a clean sheet and a comfortable win in Bangor, playing the full 90 minutes.

Tuesday 27th September
Republic of Ireland Under-19s 1 Hungary Under-19s 0
Nantporth Stadium

The teenage defender was named on the bench and wasn't called upon to feature in Ireland's final outing of the current international period.

Lucas De Bolle

Thursday 22nd September
Northern Ireland Under-21s 1 Scotland Under-21s 3
Danny Blanchflower Stadium

Magpies youngster De Bolle, who is currently on loan at Hamilton Academical, made an 85th-minute substitute appearance as his side ran out comfortable winners.

Sunday 25th September
Scotland Under-21s 1 Northern Ireland Under-21s 1
The SMiSA Stadium

De Bolle started for the Scots in Paisley and made his presence felt, recording an assist with a well-weighted pass for Flynn Clarke's opener. Dale Taylor levelled the scores, but De Bolle went close to a winner with a shot that whistled past the upright.
