International Magpies: Agony for England

A handful of Eddie Howe's squad have been in action at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this month, while others have featured for their countries in pre-tournament friendlies. Here's a round-up of all the games Newcastle United's internationals have been involved in during the break from domestic action...

Al Bayt Stadium
The Three Lions were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by the reigning world champions, meaning none of Newcastle United's players will be returning to Tyneside with a World Cup winners medal.
Aurélien Tchouaméni's opener was cancelled out by Harry Kane's penalty, but Olivier Giroud put France in front once more. England were awarded another spot-kick in the 82nd minute, but captain Kane fired off target. Pope, Trippier and Wilson were all unused substitutes.
Sunday 4th December

Al Bayt Stadium
The United trio were all unused substitutes as England as they begin the knockout stage with a straightforward win over Senegal.
Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka got the goals to set up a mouthwatering quarter-final clash against France next weekend.
Tuesday 29th November

Al-Rayyan Stadium
Wilson made a 57th-minute entrance in place of Harry Kane as a brace from Marcus Rashford, either side of a Phil Foden strike, sealed a comfortable win for England.
Trippier also came off the bench eight minutes later, replacing Luke Shaw, while Pope was again an unused substitute as the Three Lions set up a second round clash with Senegal.

A win from their second group game on Friday would have seen England all but make sure of their place in the knockout stage, but the Three Lions were held to a goalless draw by a resolute USA side.
Trippier played the full 90 minutes, while Pope and Wilson were both unused substitutes.
Monday 21st November

Khalifa International Stadium
Trippier and Wilson both helped the Three Lions begin their World Cup campaign with an emphatic 6-2 win over Iran in Group A.
Trippier played the full 90 minutes at right back and had a hand in his side's second of the game, as his corner was nodded down by Harry Maguire for Bukayo Saka to thump home and add to Jude Bellingham's opener.
Further efforts from Raheem Sterling, Saka and Marcus Rashford - who netted just after Mehdi Taremi's consolation - made it 5-1 to England before Wilson entered the fray for his World Cup debut, replacing skipper Harry Kane.
Trippier then took the armband and United frontman Wilson provided an assist for his country's sixth, racing onto Bellingham's through ball before unselfishly squaring for Jack Grealish to tap home before Taremi's stoppage time spot-kick for Iran.
Fellow Magpies man Pope remained on the bench throughout as Gareth Southgate's men kicked off the tournament in style.
Friday 9th December
Croatia 1 Brazil 1 (Croatia won 4-2 on penalties)
Education City Stadium
Brazil's interest in this year's tournament came to an end at the hands of Croatia, who won on penalties after an enthralling 120 minutes.
Neymar's stunner gave Brazil the lead in extra time but Bruno Petkovic's leveller forced spot-kicks, where Croatia triumphed comfortably to book their place in the semi-finals.
United midfielder Guimarães was an unused substitute.
Monday 5th December

Stadium 974
Guimarães stayed on the bench throughout as Brazil charged past South Korea to set up a quarter-final clash with Croatia.
Vinicius Junior, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta got the goals for one of the tournament favourites, meaning Paik Sung-ho's fine strike proved a mere consolation.

With Brazil already certain of a place in the next round, Guimarães was named among the substitutes but came on for Manchester United's Fred in the 55th minute.
He picked up a booking and came close to scoring - but it was Cameroon who got the only goal of the game in stoppage time.
Vincent Aboubakar headed home, before being shown a second yellow card for his celebration. Cameroon bowed out despite their victory, but Brazil are safely through to the round of 16, where they'll take on South Korea on Monday.

Guimarães entered the fray as a substitute just before the hour mark to make his World Cup debut for Tite's men.
The former Lyon man had a hand in the build-up to what looked like Brazil's opener, but Vinicius Junior's neat finish was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.
Casemiro's arrowed finish inside the final ten minutes won it for the Seleção, who booked their place in the knockout stage thanks to the victory.

The United midfielder stayed on the bench throughout as Brazil began their campaign with a 2-0 win over Serbia in Group G.
The 25-year-old missed out on a World Cup bow as Richarlison's double sealed victory for the Seleção - but he did manage to get onto the pitch to join in the celebrations after the Tottenham forward's first goal.
Tuesday 6th December
Portugal 6 Switzerland 1
Lusail Iconic Stadium
The Magpies stopper started but was withdrawn at half time having picked up a yellow card, as Switzerland bowed out at the round of 16 stage.
A hat-trick from Goncalo Ramos and goals from Pepe, Raphael Guerriero and Rafael Leao sealed an emphatic win for Portugal, with Manuel Akanji's solitary reply proving to be Schär's side's final contribution to the tournament.

Serbia 2 Switzerland 3

Schär made his first start of the competition in what proved to be one of the games of the tournament so far as the Rossocrociati qualified for the round of 16 as group runners-up.
Xherdan Shaqiri gave Switzerland the lead, but former Magpie Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled before Dusan Vlahovic put Serbia in front in the 35th minute - a result which would have taken them through at Switzerland's expense.
But Breel Embolo equalised just before half time, and Remo Freuler netted in the second half, with Schär playing the full match and getting a yellow card.

Like Guimarães, Schär didn't make it off the bench in Switzerland's win over Cameroon last week and didn't feature in the defeat to Brazil either, with Switzerland boss Murat Yakin opting not to send him on to go head-to-head with his Newcastle teammate.

Schär's side kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win over Cameroon in Group G.
The United defender remained on the bench throughout as Breel Embolo's second half strike won it for the Rossocrociati.

Schär started for Switzerland in their World Cup warm-up friendly against Ghana in Qatar. The centre back played 65 minutes before being replaced by Haris Seferovic, but his side were beaten by strikes from Southampton's Mohammed Salisu and Bristol City's Antoine Semenyo.

Lionel Messi inspired two-times champions Argentina to victory in his 1,000th career appearance, but Magpies youngster Kuol made his own piece of history.
Argentina were 2-0 up through Messi and Julián Álvarez when Kuol came off the bench in the 72nd minute, becoming - aged 18 years and 79 days - the youngest player to appear in the knockout stages of a World Cup since a 17-year-old Pelé in 1958.
Within five minutes of his introduction, the Socceroos had pulled one back when Craig Goodwin's strike deflected off Enzo Fernández. And with the last kick of the game, Kuol superbly brought down the ball in the box but saw his shot on the turn brilliantly saved by Emiliano Martínez.

Teenage frontman Kuol was again an unused substitute as Australia booked their place in the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time since 2006 with a 1-0 win over Denmark.
Graham Arnold's side knew, should they avoid defeat and should Tunisia fail to cause an upset against group leaders and World Cup holders France, they would be through.
But that’s exactly what happened as Tunisia pulled off a shock result, with Wahbi Khazri's second half strike earning them a stunning win over Les Bleus.
However, Mathew Leckie's effort on the hour duly gave Australia the advantage they needed.
And they held on to record victory and crush Denmark's qualification hopes in the process, with Kuol watching on from the sideline.

Kuol wasn't called upon from the bench in the Socceroos' second group game, which they won courtesy of Mitchell Duke's first half header.
Tuesday 22nd November

Al Janoub Stadium
The teenage forward - who is the second youngest player at this year's World Cup finals - will join the Magpies from Central Coast Mariners in January.
His Australia side were thrashed by holders France, with the 18-year-old named among the substitutes. The Socceroos took a surprise lead through Craig Goodwin but were pegged back by Adrien Rabiot before Olivier Giroud's brace, which came either side of a Kylian Mbappe header, sealed a straightforward win for the 2018 tournament winners.
Kuol was introduced in place of Goodwin with quarter of an hour remaining, making history in the process as he became the youngest player to represent Australia in the competition - as well as the ninth-youngest player to ever play at a World Cup finals.

The in-form United winger played the opening 45 minutes for his country as they were beaten 1-0 by Peru in a friendly in Lima. Alex Valera netted the only goal of the contest.

Diyarbakır Stadium
Fraser was handed a start by Steve Clarke for the friendly in Diyarbakir, but goals from Ozan Kabak and Cengiz Under condemned them to defeat despite John McGinn's consolation. The Magpies man played the first half before Liverpool's Calvin Ramsay was sent on in his place.
