International round-up: Almirón's Paraguay held to draw

Miguel Almirón was the only Newcastle United player in international action on Tuesday as he lined up for Paraguay’s 2022 World Cup qualifier in Colombia.

The Magpies forward started the game at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez in Barranquilla, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

It was a relatively uneventful evening for Almirón, who saw his side reduced to ten men before the end of the contest as Andres Cubas was dismissed.

The point does Paraguay few favours in their bid to secure qualification for next year’s tournament in Qatar, with Almirón and his team now just three points above bottom-placed Venezuela in the South American group – and three points shy of seventh-placed Uruguay in the final play-off spot.

The United man played the full 90 minutes, adding to his 84-minute outing in the 1-0 defeat to Chile last week, and will now return to Tyneside to link up with the rest of Eddie Howe’s charges.

Meanwhile, Elliot Anderson was an unused substitute in Scotland Under-21s’ 2-0 European Championship qualifying defeat at home to Belgium.

And Oisin McEntee also remained on the bench on Tuesday as the Republic of Ireland Under-21s’ 1-0 win over Sweden in their qualifier.
