In-form Parkinson focussed on Forest trip

Written by Luke Vinton

Teenage forward Ben Parkinson is aiming to add to his goalscoring tally with Newcastle United Under-21s ahead of the young Magpies' Premier League 2 trip to Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 1pm GMT).

United's second-string take on their Reds counterparts at the Nigel Doughty Academy aiming to return to winning ways and ending an unwanted eight-game winless streak in Division Two.

Parkinson, who has netted twice in his last three league matches at under-21 level, is determined for Newcastle's youngsters to respond in bright fashion after a 5-2 home defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion, despite taking the lead inside five minutes.

The Durham-born youngster, who joined United's youth set-up at the age of seven, told nufc.co.uk: "Following the previous results, the boys are all looking forward to Saturday and we are going there looking to take home all three points.

"We were disappointed with the way the game (agains West Brom) went, especially after going one-nil up but I think there were positives to take from the match especially going forward as we created some good chances and I think that's something we can build on going forward.

"Starting the game well is a massive part of what decides a game and, recently, we have done that well but ultimately it's the result that matters so we need to make sure we carry the start throughout the whole game.

"Our last four games are going to be really important and they could define the season as we want to move forward as a team as well as up the league table game by game."

Parkinson had netted nine goals at under-18 level this term, captaining the Toon teenagers during their FA Youth Cup campaign, before making the step into under-21s football in recent weeks.

The versatile forward, who signed a two-year scholarship with his boyhood club in the summer of 2021, is hoping to continue his bright form with United's second-string for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

Parkinson, who celebrated his 18th birthday last week, added: "Going from under-18s to under-21s football has been a positive challenge for me as the pace is much quicker and a lot more physical. However, I would like to think I have stepped up to that challenge and I'm really enjoying it.

"Scoring two in my last three Premier League 2 games has been a real confidence boost for me. I love scoring goals and it is my job at the end of the day so I just want to keep pushing forward and, hopefully, add a few more before the end of the season."
