'I'm claiming that one', insists Sørensen after Fulham treble

Further strikes from Juanito and Sørensen rendered Jayden Harris’ brace a mere consolation, but the Magpies youngster is adamant his side’s third of the night, which he immediately claimed, was his goal.

“Definitely, I’m claiming that one,” the 19-year-old told nufc.co.uk. “I was just thinking straight away, ‘I’ll claim that, and I’ll stick my hand up’.

“We’ll see. I’m not sure if I’ll get it, but hopefully I will. Hopefully I’ll get the matchball too.”

Sørensen’s treble capped a memorable night for the forward and his side, who were dominant for large spells as they sealed their first Premier League 2 Division Two win since August’s 5-0 victory over Sunderland.

The former HB Køge man – who now has seven goals for the season – feels the extra work he’s been putting in is starting to pay dividends.

“Ben (Dawson) always tells us to play out from the back, and I thought we did that brilliantly,” he said. “Some of the goals were unbelievable – we were playing all the way through their team and then finishing it at the end of it, so it was great.

“You always get the chances and you’ve just got to take them, so it’s a good feeling. It’s always nice to score the goals – I work hard every day in training, I work on my finishing all the time, so it’s good to see the benefit of it.”

He added: “Getting 3-0 up, I thought we were comfortable, but then they got the first goal and we backed off a bit. We didn’t press as high as we did when we were 3-0 up, and they got to 3-2.

“But then we came back strongly and got the fourth and the fifth. I thought we were in decent control, but maybe when they got the first goal we dropped off, and we shouldn’t have. We should have kept playing as we were when we were 3-0 up.”

United now face Notts County Under-23s in the Premier League Cup on Thursday, before facing County’s first team in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night.

Sørensen hopes the emphatic win over Fulham will prove to be the start of a good run as the Magpies seek the consistency which has been missing from their season so far.

“Ben always talks about consistency so hopefully we’ll bomb on from here and keep winning. We have a game on Thursday against Notts County, so we need to try and get the win there as well,” he said.

“You always get a big confidence boost when you score goals. We’ve just beaten Fulham 5-2 and we’re all buzzing for the next one now. We need to get that momentum going.”
