Hendrick named in Republic of Ireland squad

Newcastle United midfielder Jeff Hendrick has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their upcoming international fixtures in October.

Stephen Kenny’s men face a World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan in Baku on Saturday, 9th October, with the Group A clash set to kick off at 5pm BST.

They follow that up with a friendly against Qatar at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Tuesday, 12th October, with that game set to start at 7:45pm.

And former Burnley man Hendrick has been called up by Kenny for the games, with Eire looking to avoid slipping to the bottom of their group.

Azerbaijan currently lie at the foot of Group A, just a point and a place ahead of the Republic, who have taken two points from their five outings so far.

The 29-year-old will be hoping to add to his total of 64 caps in the coming fortnight – but fellow Magpie Ciaran Clark has missed out on a place in Kenny’s 26-man squad.
