Written by Dan King

Ashington-born defender Macaulay Gillesphey has joined Carlisle United following his release from Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old previously had two loan spells with the Cumbrians and has now signed a two-year contract at Brunton Park.

Gillesphey is one of several players who will leave St. James' Park on the expiry of their contracts this summer, including Massadio Haïdara, Jesús Gámez and Curtis Good.

Under-23 players Yannick Aziakonou, Kyle Cameron, Yasin Ben El-Mhanni, Stuart Findlay, Owen Gallacher, Mackenzie Heaney, Tom Heardman, Jack Hunter, Ben Kitchen, Michael Newberry, Brendan Pearson, Callum Smith, Liam Smith, Craig Spooner, Dan Ward, Callum Williams and Paul Woolston were not offered new deals, while Kieren Aplin, Isaac Gamblin, Mace Goodridge, Jack Robson and Kurtis Russell have been released from the club's Academy.

Defender Newberry has linked up with UMF Víkingur Ólafsvík in Iceland.

Meanwhile former England youth international Heaney has joined Ebac Northern League side Newcastle Benfield and Robson has headed to the USA with Saginaw Valley State University.
