Gibson's Young Lions through to last four

Written by Dan King

England progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA Under-17 European Championship finals on Saturday - and secured a World Cup place in the process.

The Young Lions beat Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Velika Gorica, with Jadon Sancho on target.

And Newcastle defender Lewis Gibson again played the full match as Steve Cooper named the same starting XI for the fourth successive game.

England will now face Turkey on Tuesday, with a place in the final awaiting the winner.

As well as progressing to the last four, the result also booked England's place as one of five European representatives at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in India in October.
