Gibson Named In England Squad

Written by Dan King

Newcastle's Lewis Gibson has been named in the England squad for the opening round of the 2017 European Under-17 Championships qualifying campaign.

The Young Lions will travel to Romania next week ahead of facing the hosts as well as Austria and Azerbaijan across a six-day period, and defender Gibson is included in Steve Cooper's group.
Gibson - who scored his first goal of the season for Newcastle's under-18s in Saturday's 4-2 win against Middlesbrough - helped England's under-17s win the Croatia Cup earlier this month.

England sit in group six of the qualifying round, and will kick-off their campaign against Azerbaijan in Buftea on Tuesday, 25th October at 1pm.
Next up are Romania, at the same venue, two days later on Thursday, 27th October.

England's group-stage fixtures conclude on Sunday, 30th October as they face Austria in Voluntari. A top-two place will secure a spot in the Elite qualifiers, while the five best third-placed teams from the 12 groups will also progress.

The England under-17s squad for the opening round of the 2017 European Under-17 Championships qualifiers is:
Curtis Anderson (Manchester City), Thomas McGill (Brighton & Hove Albion), Timothy Eyoma (Tottenham Hotspur), Lewis Gibson (Newcastle United), Joel Latibeaudiere (Manchester City), Brooklyn Lyons-Foster (Tottenham Hotspur), Jonathan Panzo (Chelsea), Alex Denny (Everton), Morgan Gibbs-White (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Angel Gomes (Manchester United), George McEachran (Chelsea), Tashan Oakley-Boothe (Tottenham Hotspur), Rhian Brewster (Liverpool), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea), Danny Loader (Reading), Jadon Malik Sancho (Manchester City), Emile Smith Rowe (Arsenal)
