Gibson and England miss out on European glory

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Lewis Gibson and England suffered a heartbreaking end to their UEFA Under-17 European Championship campaign, as opponents Spain struck a last-gasp equaliser before emerging victorious in a penalty shootout.

The Three Lions looked to have one hand on the trophy as they headed into additional time, but Nacho Diaz's 86th-minute header took the final to spot-kicks.

Rhian Brewster and Joel Latibeaudiere both missed from 12 yards, while the Spaniards converted four times out of four to secure the title for a record-breaking third time.

It had all started so promisingly for England, who led less than 20 minutes in thanks to Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Mateu Morey restored parity before the break, but Phil Foden's impressive strike put Steve Cooper's side back in front just shy of the hour-mark.

And that was the way it stayed until the dying embers, when substitute Diaz nodded in Jose Alonso's corner.

United youngster Gibson again started and finished the clash, and returns to Tyneside having played every single minute of the tournament in Croatia.
