Gary Speed tribute planned on Sunday

Written by Dan King

Two of Gary Speed’s former clubs meet at a sold-out Elland Road on Sunday, and there are plans to pay tribute to the former Wales international as the fifth anniversary of his tragic death approaches.

Speed wore the number 11 shirt with distinction for both Newcastle and Leeds, playing more than 400 times combined for the two clubs. His death on 27th November, 2011 shocked football and particularly supporters of the two Uniteds he served so well.

Members of his family will be in attendance at Elland Road on Sunday and in the 11th minute of the match, supporters of both Leeds and Newcastle are invited to join together in a minute’s applause.

Speed was in the Newcastle side when the Magpies last visited Elland Road in a competitive fixture back in 2003, when Alan Shearer scored twice in a 2-2 draw.
