Gallowgate Flags quiz raises £3,000

Written by Lee Marshall

A quiz night organised by supporters behind the Gallowgate Flags movement has raised £3,000 for new flag and banner displays at St. James’ Park.

The second Gallowgate Flags quiz night took place at the stadium’s NINE Bar on Friday evening and tickets were sold out, with around 200 fans in attendance.

As well as a tough Newcastle United-related quiz, there was also a raffle at the event, with supporters winning prizes including a behind-the-scenes media day at a Magpies home match, Matt Ritchie’s signed match-worn boots and golf at Close House.

Forty questions were read out by members of the first team squad in a pre-recorded video and there was also a special video message from manager, Rafa Benítez.

Supporters can see the full video and take part in the quiz at home, here (spoiler alert: the answers are included at the end!):

Addressing attendees, Rafa Benítez said: “We have seen the Gallowgate Flags and we appreciate the job that you are doing.

“Keep going, keep doing that because it’s really important for us and we appreciate that it will be a key part of our success.

“Hopefully you will enjoy a good night.”

Gallowgate Flags is a fully independent supporter-led initiative that has transformed the appearance of the Gallowgate End and South East corner of St. James’ Park on matchdays.

All flag and banner displays have been funded by fans and the group has plans for even more before the season concludes in May.

Alex Hurst, co-founder of Gallowgate Flags, said: "The quiz night was a massive success and has raised enough money for us to purchase more giant flags this season.

“To have the manager to say a few words was incredible and we're really grateful to the club and the team for donating prizes and asking the questions on the night.

“Thanks to all that came along and helped us raise the money. We've now raised over £15,000 from Newcastle United supporters this season through fundraising, T-shirt sales and our two quizzes, which is incredible."
