Euro disappointment for Watts and England
Written by Dan King
England's hopes of retaining the European Under-19 Championships came to an end with a heavy defeat to France on Monday.
And that means Newcastle youngster Kelland Watts won't become the latest young Magpie to win silverware for his country, after Freddie Woodman and Adam Armstrong helped England under-21s to lift the Toulon Tournament earlier this summer.
Versatile Watts - a former Ponteland High School pupil - had started England's first two matches in Finland, making his debut in a 3-2 win over Turkey and playing the full game before keeping his place for a 1-1 draw with Ukraine three days later. He played for 84 minutes that time.
On Monday, though, he was an unused substitute as Paul Simpson's side lost 5-0 to Les Bleuets in their final Group B game.
That meant England finished third - but still have a Under-20 World Cup qualifying play-off game against Norway to look forward to on Thursday.
