Euro 2020: Turkish delight for Schär and Co as Switzerland keep qualification hopes alive

Written by Dan King

Switzerland's hopes of qualifying for the last 16 of Euro 2020 are very much alive after a vital 3-1 win over Turkey on Sunday.

Anything less than three points would have seen the Rossocrociati eliminated in the group stages, but they will now be hopeful of progressing as one of the best third-placed sides.

Xherdan Shaqiri (2) and Haris Seferovic got the goals for the Swiss - all three were set up by Steven Zuber - with Irfan Can Kahveci on the scoresheet for Turkey, who will go home without picking up a point at the tournament despite being tipped as competition dark horses in some quarters.

Having started Switzerland's opening two games which had yielded one point, Newcastle United's Fabian Schär was an unused substitute in Baku.

He and his team-mates must now wait for the rest of the group games to be completed to discover if their efforts will be enough to send them through.

On Tuesday, Ryan Fraser's Scotland play their final Group D game against Croatia at Hampden Park, while Emil Krafth's Sweden and Martin Dúbravka's Slovakia take on Poland and Spain respectively in Group E on Wednesday.
